The outcome of your divorce will dictate your financial standing for years to come. With so much at stake, you have to do everything you can to protect your financial interests throughout the process. That can be difficult to do, though, when your spouse continues to mismanage funds, squander marital assets and hide marital resources. In fact, if left unchecked, these actions can put you in a dire financial predicament as you move into the next chapter of life. You can’t let that happen.

Steps to take if your spouse is mishandling marital assets

If your spouse is engaging in financial mismanagement or is hiding assets, then you need to act now to protect your interests. Here are some steps to stop your spouse from taking advantage of you:

  • Gather all financial documents, including pay stubs, bank and credit card statements, investment account records and tax returns so that you can identify suspicious activity that may be indicative of financial wrongdoing.
  • Monitor your marital financial accounts so that you can spot large and suspicious transactions that require investigation.
  • Consider utilizing a forensic accountant who can follow suspicious activity and trace missing funds to report them to the court and hopefully assist in recovering those assets for your use.
  • Seek a court order that prevents your spouse from engaging in large transactions or otherwise mishandling marital funds.

Protect your financial interests throughout the divorce process

Your future is on the line in a divorce case. As such, you can’t afford to let your spouse seize the reins of the process and take advantage of you. Instead, you need to enter the process as fully prepared as possible so that you can make the compelling arguments necessary to protect your interests.
